Having super thin and super fine hair means it can be a challenge to achieve the volume and body I crave. Over time, I’ve perfected my routine, and now I can confidently say that my hair feels fuller, shinier, and healthier! If you’re like me and want to add some life to your locks, here’s a step-by-step guide on how I style my hair for maximum volume.
Step 1: Start with the Right Foundation
The key to building volume starts at the roots. I begin with Root Canal from Evo. This volumizing root lift spray is a game-changer for fine hair like mine. It builds body, texture, and adds shine. Spray it directly at the roots to create lift and volume where you need it most.
Step 2: Hydrate and Add Shine
Next, I reach for Whip It Good from Evo, a moisture mousse that’s perfect for hydrating and softening my fine hair. Not only does it improve manageability, but it also boosts shine without weighing the hair down. I pump a small amount into my palms and distribute it evenly through my hair, focusing on the mid-lengths to ends for added hydration and softness.
Step 3: Comb It Out
Thin hair can be delicate, so I always use a wide-tooth comb to gently brush it out. This ensures my hair doesn’t get tugged or broken, which is especially important for fine strands that are more prone to damage.
Step 4: Blow Dry for Lift
The next step is drying. I use the L’Ange Soleil Professional Dryer and blow my hair almost completely dry before bringing out a brush. I find that blowing it mostly dry first helps set the base for volume without overworking my hair.
Step 5: Concentrate the Heat
Once my hair is nearly dry, I add the air concentrator attachment to my dryer. This focuses the hot air precisely where I need it, which not only helps eliminate frizz but also provides targeted lift at the roots. To get the best results, make sure the concentrator is parallel to how you’re holding the dryer for a sleek and polished finish.
Step 6: Work in Sections with a Round Brush
Here’s where the volume magic happens! I section my hair and use a round brush with an aluminum barrel to work on each section. For maximum lift, I scrunch the hair up at the roots with the brush, apply heat for a few seconds, and then brush underneath the section. For shorter hair, a smaller round brush works best, while medium-length hair benefits from a medium-sized brush.
Step 7: Smooth the Longest Pieces
For the longer pieces of my hair, I love using the L’ange Le Volume 2-in-1 Brush Dryer. This combo tool not only dries but smooths the hair as I work through the sections. I use the hot setting for a few seconds, then switch to the cool setting to lock in volume. This trick helps me achieve sleek, smooth hair without sacrificing volume.
Step 8: Add Texture and Hold
Once my hair is dry and voluminous, I use a texture spray to keep that fullness throughout the day. My go-to is Living Proof Full Dry Volume and Texture Spray. I apply it at the roots and use my fingers to massage it in, giving my hair that final volume boost and enhancing texture.
Step 9: Flexible Hold for All-Day Volume
Finally, I lock everything in place with a medium-weight hairspray. I swear by Bumble and Bumble Spray De Mode Flexible Hold Hairspray. It gives my hair a light, flexible hold that’s perfect for keeping volume and shape all day long without feeling heavy or stiff.
