Dark under eye circles can be a common concern for women 50+ with mature skin... like me! While they can be caused by a variety of factors, such as genetics, age, and lifestyle, there are effective ways to treat and minimize their appearance. Here, I'll share a few tips specifically tailored to women my age, as I know tackling dark under eye is top of the list for most of us.
1. Hydrate and Moisturize:
One of the key reasons women have dark under eye circles is dehydration. As we age, our skin tends to lose moisture, leading to a dull and tired appearance. To combat this, it is crucial to drink lots of water daily and incorporate a rich, hydrating eye cream into your skincare routine. Look for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and shea butter to deeply moisturize the delicate under eye area.
My favorite skin care products are from Osea. They have two products that work really well at tackling dark under eye. First is their Ocean Eyes Age Defying Eye Serum. This is a cooling roll-on that helps to reduce the appearance of dark circles, crows feet, and under eye bags. I also love Osea's Advanced Repair Eye Cream. If you'd like to try either of these products, use KELLYE10 for 10% off.
2. Protect with SPF:
Sun damage can exacerbate the appearance of dark under eye circles and contribute to premature aging. Make it a habit to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to your under eye area and the rest of your face daily. This will help prevent further discoloration and protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
3. Prep and Hydrate
Before applying any makeup, it's crucial to prep the under eye area properly. Seint Balm applied under the eye 5-10 minutes beforehand can really help to plump, smooth, and lock-in moisture in the delicate under eye area. This will create a smooth canvas for makeup application and prevent the product from settling into fine lines and wrinkles.
4. Choose the Right Concealer:
When selecting a concealer, opt for a lightweight cream and not a liquid. Liquids are too heavy and they only cake, crease, and settle into fine lines and crows feet. Plus, creams are hydrating as they are alcohol-free.
Use a foundation shade that is one shade lighter. Avoid going too light as that can create a reverse raccoon effect. Apply this lighter shade of cream foundation to the inner and outer corner of the eye only. This will allow you to use the least amount of product.
Also apply this shade down the center of the face. This lighter, brighter color will reflect light and give you a subtle glow.

5. Color Correct:
If you still need to neutralize darkness under the eye, consider a color corrector. If you have blue under the eye, try Demi corrector O3. For purple, try YO1. For gray/green, try RO1. Apply a small amount of the corrector to the darkest areas of the under eye circles and gently blend it out using your ring finger or a damp makeup sponge.
6. Blend, Blend, Blend:
To achieve a seamless finish, blend using a damp makeup sponge or a small, fluffy brush. Gently press and bounce the sponge or brush along the under eye area, ensuring that the product is evenly distributed and blended into the skin. Take your time with this step to avoid any harsh lines or unevenness.
7. Don't Forget the Rest of the Face:
To achieve a balanced and cohesive look, make sure to pay attention to the rest of your makeup. Enhance other features, such as the lips or cheeks, to draw attention away from the under eye area. A pop of color on the lips or a touch of blush can help create a youthful and radiant overall appearance.
